Evaluation 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the final product?

This question is answered below again using YouTube.

Evaluation 6

What have you learnt from the technology from constructing this media piece?

This evaluation answer was again created through using YouTube. In answering this question we also used a green screen so that our title sequence can be shown at the same time. Making it easy for the viewer to recognise what were talking about.

Evaluation 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

This question was answered through an audio piece which is available below.

Evaluation 4: part 2

Who would be the audience for your media product?

We targeted a primary audiece using the Demgraphics and Pyschographics tables. Like in mg 'Audience Profile' blog I will now explain how we got to deciding our final primary audiences and why.

Demographics - we chose people who are from sections B - E. this is because they show the most family structures out of all of the groups. Therefore leaving out group 'A'. We didn't consider this group firstly because we felt that this would be the one full of career orientated adults who probably aren't at the stage of their lives yet to be cemented in and concentrated on family life as a whole. Of course some would be family men or women but the majority we felt wouldn't and therefore not be in the perfect place to be receiving the marketing and advertisement for  'Life Goes On'. The film also jumps through multiple genres all in one, but being mainly a Drama, so we felt that it would definitely be a film with something for everyone. The only thing the primary audience has to do is be in a position to be able to  see the marketing and then be able to go and pay to see the film. B - E are people we feel will do this.

Psychographics - the groups of people we will target from this end of the spectrum are 'mainstreamers' and 'explorers'. Firstly, we decided on mainstreamers because they represent the majority of people. With a large strong family base to it we felt our film would fit in well with these types of people. Also because these mainstreamers, we felt, would be people who would mostly recognise main actor and star Tom Hanks. Then secondly we chose to target explorers because they represent people who we think would love the film and all of it's different type of genres elements and events. Stereotypically a group with mainly younger adults we though all of the action, energy packed and adventurous elements to the film will be perfect and something the 'explorers' will love. These elements would all become divident in the scenes where main character Murphy nostalgically looks back on life and the flashbacks present the most emotional and memorable times in his life.

This is a piece from our initial audience profile where we looked in more detail on the actual genre and how the film would be marketed in terms of wheather or not we would distributing it through film festivals.

Evaluation 3

Which media institution might well distribute your media product and why?

One media institution that would possible produce our group's piece of work would preferably be Paramount Pictures. Paramount is one of Hollywoods 'Big 6' movie production companies.

the main reaso why i choose this company in particular to produce 'Life Goes On' is because it wuld be starring Tom Hanks, a massive bockbuster name. Therefore a fairly big budget would be provided and with the star power and origional screeplay it would propbably produce a lot of profit. This is the main factor that the Big 6 in Hollywood think about when the considering to producing a film.

Also, this company would be able to distribute the film very well through vertical integration, due to their fame and power. Another factor in marketing the film would be the big star power of Tom Hanks - also in Forest Gump (Zemeckis, 1994). A film also produced and distributed by Paramount who also, due to their power, would also be able to distribute a successful marketing campaign. This would be the marketing to apeal not just directly to a target audience but also in mass marketing in advertising and social media for example.

The possible mass distribution will also determi how successful the film is going to be. If a lot of iterest is created then great. If no interest is created, in comparison, then this would be made visible very quickly for the production team to make decisions. As a result of finding out this data then not as much money would be wasted on setting a wide release for the film. Instead a smaller linited release would be set, even released straight to online subscriptions such as Netflix, or to DVD.

Evaluation 1

What ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product, a film title sequence, uses, develops and challenges forms and conventions of real media products in many ways. Firstly it uses them as, in our group; we watched and used other title sequences. For example Wes Andeson’s Moonrise Kingdom, Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Royal Tenenbaums.  Also ‘Catch Me If You Can’ staring Leonardo DiCaprio. Elements such as shots, fonts and colour were the things we picked up on and used.

This is an example from Moonrise Kingdom. The font from this poster and its title sequence is what in our group we tried very had to find something similar. Mainly becuase we loved it so much and it does link to our time period of where the narrative is set.
This time period is the pre-1970's where the majority of the flash backs and events from the main characters life, W.Murphy, in the film would be presented, set and filmed.
Another Wes Anderson element we replicated was the breaking of the '4th wall' rule. This is when the actor looks straight at the camera down the sight of the lens - a technique Anderson frequently uses in his films (shown below).

Forms in which we challenged were them of the big convention that in the title sequence, the main actor is seen in the majority of it throughout. This compared to ours is quite drastic because we don’t actually present an actor for our main actor Tom Hanks, instead only the second main character, to be played by James Marsden.

One media form in which we developed upon was the fact of using ‘Stop Motion’ filming techniques. Developed from ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’ and Wes Anderson’s way of filming that film in particular we got the idea to film our ending scene in our title sequence. This was the scene with the memory box and all the nostalgic props. We filmed this by adding props two at a time and then each time something was added we took a picture. To do this the camera has to be positioned in the same place, on the same settings and at the same angle each time you do it. Then you have the perfect shots. When presented together with our font in our 'Final Look' this whole final scene / technique looked very nice.

Audience Profile

Using the two tables on show here our group chose our destined target audience.

Using the Demographics structure our primary audience would be people who sit in the B - E sectors of the table. Firstly because these groups would be the mainstreamers of who the majority of the advertising and marketing used would 100% reach. These are also the primary groups because they're stereotypically more of a family orientated society of people. Of course most of demographic group A would be exactly the same as the others and in big caring families but it just isn't as much as B - E.

Secondly, the type of audience as part of the Psychographics of the point would be 'mainstreamers' and 'explorers'. I say mainstreamers because this is largely a family orientated group of people - what our film 'Life Goes On' is based around, a family. Then lastly we chose explorers because this will be a film where, from the resulting scenes from main character Walter Murphy's past life, will express lots of energy, fast paced action packed scenes and discoveries along the way. Lasrgely younger adults, this is a group which ties into what the film will be about almost perfectly.

In addition to this audience profile this is the type of events and festivals that we would target for our film. Also this states our genre in more detail.

Final Look

This is our final edit for our title sequence. This is including our new font, new shots and new soundtrack artist. All of these elements come together very nicely.

Font Change

This is now our new font for ur title sequence. This is because the previous ones didn't look as good as we hoped when placed in the sequence. Also the new font looks a lot more like the ones used by Wes Anderson himself.

This is a screenshot from Anderson's film Moonrise Kingdom to show the similarity in font.

Soundtrack Complete

We gained permission fro Brancoala to use their copy of our soundtrack. All we had to do was to download it from safari into Final Cut Pro so we could then cut it down to size to fit in our sequence.

Soundtrack Continued part 2

After looking on Soundcloud for the same song but different artist we found a copy done by this person. This is the message we sent to gain permission:

Soundtrack Continued

After pursuing our attempt in getting the permission from 'The Science Project' to use their copy of Love Me Do we finally got a reply three days later. This was the reply:

Because of this we're now looking into getting permission from a different artist rather than changing song.

Group Change

Due to change of placement, Laine decided to leave our sixth form and therefore our media group. We'll continue to finish our evaluations as a three.

Soundtrack Chosen

In case unknown, this is what we hope the soundtrack will be like. This is because it fits with our time period where the main character is and where is set. So hopefully we are successful in finding a good copy of it

Director Change

After deciding to use font structues, colour and position of text almost to exact how Wes Anderson puts them in his films we deicded that Anderson was a more suitible person to have as a 'director' than our previous one. We initially chose, Nick Cassavetes, based on the films narrative but we've decided to divert away from that and instead in the way of how everything is actually filmed positioned and framed. Therefore more of a unique and distinct way of filming so Anderson is a very bold choice.

Filming First Class Viewing

This is our final edit for when we had class deadline to present our title sequence and what had so far to the class.

Feedback from this lesson will be to follow in resulting blogs.

Filming First Look

This was our first look at some of our very early footage. This was also good preparation for using Final Cut and other techniques to therefore make our final edit a lot better.

Soundtrack

Our 'Love Me Do' soundtrack isn't able to be chosen because its copyrighted by The Beatles. So we found a cover of the song on Soundcloud and commented on it as the makers of the song didn't leave any contact details. We're waiting for a reply.

Rachel McAdams Photo

Now in our title sequence throughout we're going to be cutting between the shots and photos of the actors and the setting. This, the black and white one, is one of the photos we will use.

Production Log No.3

Our third day of shooting consisted of decided and carrying out our idea that in our title sequence we will only use one location. also the fact of our narrative slightly changing. In this days filming we carried out everything in the house. Making good use of the mis-en-scene available to us. We also had to re-film our previous shots, now in the house on the old fashioned carpet.

First Soundtrack Look

Today Fiona and Laine looked at multiple possible soundtracks. The possible ones we will be using are from the following:

https://audionetwork.lgfl.org.uk/terms.aspx
http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music/2
http://www.mobygratis.com/catalog

The basis of the search was to find a song by an artist who was willing to give up their copy. Therefore someone and a website which is royalty free, staying away from any copy right issues.
the song also will hopefully be similar or maybe even identical to the Beatles song 'Love Me Do'.

Production Log no.2 plus

We took videos of Opening the box and then closing it just to make sure the box is straight on the table and on camera. We tried to use the tripod to get straight non shaky shots but we couldn't get the angle we wanted which was birds eye view. After figuring out we could use Lilly to stand over Oliver and he camera we ended up staying like that until we changed props. I made oliver first start to take things out of the box but that ended up becoming to confusing ad didn't give us the right effect. So fiona came up with the idea of laying out all the objects on the table in a sophisticated and neat way. We used a tracker/dolly to get the birds eye view shot of the objects by me and Fiona on either side holding the dolly then Lilly pushing the camera along it.

Production Log No.2

Behind the scenes from our second shoot.

The shoot overall wasn't too successful. Mainly because of the facts that the yellow table cliff was really creased and, due to not being able to use a tripod, Lilly had to hold the camera herself and this footage was really shaky. Because of this we've now chosen to do this scene on the floor of Laine's Nan's living room.

Feedback Response / New Idea

After responding and working with our feedback from the class we decided to change our narrative slightly. Out new idea is that the main character in the film is now the character, played by Tom Hank's, son. Being played in our film by James Marson. Therefore a much younger actor and one who will have young looking arms & hands - linking to the realism of our shots with the 'memory box'.

Also after reviewing our feedback sheets our teacher, Sinead, helped us plot the idea of having a character in shots like below which break the 4th wall rule. Wes Anderson frequently uses them for example. This example below though is from Garden State, a RomCom directed by and staring Zach Braff.

Casting: Part 2

This slide shows the actors who will be playing our secondary characters in our film.

Casting: Part 1

Our main casting roles are as followed;

First Draft Feedback

These are the sheets we got given back from our class mates after watching our first drafted cut of filming.

The main point of developing which people talked about when discussing our title sequence was the soundtrack. This is because currently at this time we don't have a final established soundtrack we've decided to use.

After feedback we've decided as a group to concentrate on this next before going onto anything new.

Audience Profile

This slide documents our audience profile and who our film would be targeted for.

Mise-en-scene Props

Tom Hanks found photo's which we will use in our title sequence. Probably to be placed in our 'memory box' as it's our main prop and will hold all of the props which relate main character Murphy's flashbacks with reality.

Mise-en-scene Props

Photo Album

We then thought about creating a photo album for our 'memory box'. This is because it's a typical thing that someone of our characters age will constantly be looking at. Also we were able to find old pictures of our main character's actor Tom Hanks. We were able to find pictures from Hank's high school, wedding, with his children and even on family holidays for example.
