Mise-en-scene Props

Tom Hanks found photo's which we will use in our title sequence. Probably to be placed in our 'memory box' as it's our main prop and will hold all of the props which relate main character Murphy's flashbacks with reality.

Mise-en-scene Props

Photo Album

We then thought about creating a photo album for our 'memory box'. This is because it's a typical thing that someone of our characters age will constantly be looking at. Also we were able to find old pictures of our main character's actor Tom Hanks. We were able to find pictures from Hank's high school, wedding, with his children and even on family holidays for example.

Before - After

Mise-en-scene Props

Passport

Another way of solidifying the films narrative and the background of the main character Mr. Murphy is by using a passport. This expresses the fact that himself and his wife could of travelled to a lot of countries and therefore a good addition to our 'memory box' we're using in our title sequence for Murphy to open and look through.

Fiona was able to get her uncles old British passport and with our character being originally English and obviously fairly old this works very well. On the passport already was her uncles name in written writing, we then wrote over this in 'Mr.W.Murphy' in the same style and position. This strengthens the narrative even more.

Mise-en-scene Props

Children's Toys

Another point of interest to consider when thinking about the films miss-en-scene is the fact that Walter Murphy has two children and also grandchildren. Therefore our decision to include children's toys is a good one.

Mise-en-scene Props

Wedding Rings

A small part of our films narrative is that the main character, Walter Murphy's, wife is already dead from when the film begins. Although she'll be already passed she'll have a large role to play in the flashbacks throughout the film. Because of this marriage one of the props we'll be using will be wedding/engagement ring(s).

Production Log No.1

Our first day of filming was successful and the types of shots we pulled off were the ones exactly to what we imagined. From these pictures also you can see how well the location will help with the mise-en-scene.

From todays filming we filmed our initial idea, the 360 degree spin shot which shows the whole of the room and therefore all of the great mise-en-scene.

Filming Location

The location our group have decided to go with is to film in Laine's Nan's house. This is because it's not modern at all, very old fashioned and decorated and full of the types of props that would fit right into the narrative. These are some pictures of the house.

Our inspiration in creating our title sequence is Wes Anderson. He works a lot with symmetry, composition and colour; in particular mustard-ey yellow colours. an example of his work is below. This is one of the kind of shots we'll be looking to pull off effectively.

Chosen Fonts

Title sequence fonts:

For the credits in our title sequence we're going to use this font 'Morsal'. This is because it's probably the font which is the easiest out of our chose selection to read. therefore making sense as this would be the part where the writing is on the page for the least amount of time.

Shorelines will be the font we use for our title. This adds realism to the era where the film will be set and be about. The font also isn't as feminine as some of the others possible ones we picked out. This is something we thought about because of our main character, Walter Murphy, obviously being male. Aswell, the font isn't too hard to read so therefore an overall good choice.

Pitch

This is our groups joint effort in creating our pitch. this explains what the film will be about, who would star in it and who even would be behind the production company.

SE7EN Research (Soundtrack)

Title sequence research - Soundtrack (SE7EN)

This is the work of Kyle Cooper on the film SE7EN which I recently researched to gain a further understanding in film and to do with title sequences. This is probable one of my favourite ones in which I researched.

When it comes to creating my own title sequence in a group these types of close ups, nervous on edge soundtracks could be the sort of things to include and think about. As long as it suits the genre that is.

Production Call Sheet

This will be each of our group members jobs for making the title sequence for out film 'Life Goes On'.

Typology - Title Sequence Fonts

These are our possible fonts for the title sequence were making to present our credits and title.

Kyle Cooper Research

Kyle Cooper is an American title sequence designer and director. with a MFA in Graphic Design as well as a BFA from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

His work has been used for many films and television series as well as games. Some of these include:

- Film: SE7EN, Minority Report, Might Joe Young, The Avengers, The American President, Rising Sun,
Sister Act 2, Iron Man, Sherlock Holmes, Spider Man, Orphan, Godzilla: Final Wars, Limitless,
Men in Black.
- Television: American Horror Story, Scream Queens, The Walking Dead.

Kyle cooper is known for his hectic and brisk title sequences such as David Fincher’s Se7en
(1995),which includes various overlapped extreme close ups that entails of rather disturbing
and sinister images, such as mutilated bodies in a notebook and extreme close ups of sharp
objects and strange instruments. Throughout the sequence there is eerie scratching sounds
and clicking that appears, which connotes the character being introduced to the audience is
rather unstable. This title sequence also changed the way that title sequences made.

Kyle Cooper's 'SE7EN' title sequence was revolutionary and changed the way in which title

sequences were designed after.

Animatic Sequence

This is our groups animatic storyboard sequence; using a similar soundtrack to what will be in our actual title sequence and drawings from our title sequence plan. In this animatic sequence we also based the timings around the amount of time we would use each particular camera shot.

Genre Sheet

Looking and researching genres is what we were tasked with. To do this we used this sheet to help organise and stamp down our ideas. Myself and the rest of the group all contributed towards this.

Title sequence / Film Narrative

Our film which were creating a title sequence for is what we, in groups, had to create and structure a complete narrative plan for. We used the template of Todorov's narrative to do this.

Equilibrium- The film will begin with the main character, Walter Murphy, being visited by his son and grandchildren. The visit is in aid of Walter and his late wife, Catherine, 50thwedding anniversary.

Disruption- Walter’s grandchildren begin to ask questions about their grandma so he goes upstairs to get a photo album to show his grandchildren, whilst retrieving the photo album he comes across boxes of memorabilia, due to this Walter starts experiencing flash backs as the belongings he finds remind him of his past.

Disequilibrium- He comes across his old army uniform and medals, this reminds him when he was sent away from whom he was loved by. The only company he had was his friend, Harry, who helped him through the war. Sadly one month before the war came to an end Harry was hit by a bomb along with three other men from their platoon. Other flashbacks include; when and how Walter met Catherine, their first date, their wedding day and honeymoon, the birth of their first child, Catherine's diagnosis and also the emotional day when Catherine passed away.

Repair- Whilst re-living moments of his past and reminiscing Walter has a chance to reflect and gain closure on his wife's death, he realises that they had an amazing life. His son and grandchildren are here to support him.

New Equilibrium- The film will end with Walter returning to the living room with the photo albums. Walter is grateful for the memories life he made with his wife, the film is symbolic of life and loss.

All created by us all in our group. Myself, Fiona, Laine and Lilly.

Genre Research Developed

Dr Stranglelove (1964)

Directed by Pablo Ferro, Dr Stranglelove had a handwritten typography for its title sequence, making it personal, in bold block with white taking up most of the screen and also having a dissolve transition from word to word. It also has a video of a flying plane in the backround taking up most of the screen in black and white making you focus more on the typography but also making you think something bad is going to happen as it felt like it was flying into something " bad".

Vertigo (1958)

Directed by Saul Bass, this film has loud orchestra music throughout giving it a dark and mysterious feel making you curious to what happens and on the edge of your seat insisting it on being a thriller. The typography of the cast were showed in the middle of the screen in bold white on top of close ups of  a woman's face like her eyes and mouth (maybe linking her to the film), all moving images. Then was followed to be presented on the side of the screen when listing producers, editors etc with distracting moving changing colour patterns.

American Psycho (2000)

Begins with what you think are droplets of blood making us think it is going to be all about horror or thriller also with the interlinking orchestra soundtrack, but then is changed as we find out it is "food" being put on a plate tricking the audience. This changes the tenseness of the mood as we think less of a horror, also the orchestra music becomes more upbeat and still linking with the placing of the food. We start with the title sequence being visual only watching the typography with the food but then becomes to start the film bring in a sense of character to the audience as it then follows on to the opening sequence.

Love Actually (2003)

Presents us with visuals of real/archive footage of people hugging and kissing making us think the film is set in the real life and and that greetings of love ones or goodbyes are linked to the film. A warm voiceover is explaining the subject of 'love' connoting the theme of romance. This love based footage makes the viewers warm and open to the film as some can relate or wish to relate as it present  all good things about people in love.

Se7ven (1995)

Directed by David Fincher, has stop start visuals throughout of closeups of a mans hands being scaled and photographs of mutilated bodies making it disturbing for the viewers creating the sense of a thriller/horror genre. A vintage grainy screen colours is present throughout the title sequence also has scratching soundtrack playing at the same times making the viewer feel uncomfortable and also the visuals are all fidgeting and not staying in one place giving the viewers an indication of the character/protaginist. The typography has a child or messy handwriting letting us realise the film is very personal to the protagonist and foreshadowing his behaviour throughout.
